Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye arrived in Bissau on May 26, 2025, for a two-day state visit aimed at bolstering diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation with Guinea-Bissau. The visit follows an official invitation from President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and highlights the deep-rooted historical and geographic ties between the two West African nations.
During the visit, the two leaders are holding bilateral talks, while ministerial delegations are engaging in sectoral cooperation meetings focused on border security, trade, education, energy, and regional integration. Several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, including agreements on cross-border infrastructure and joint anti-smuggling efforts.
This marks President Faye’s third visit to Guinea-Bissau and the first official state visit of his presidency since taking office in March 2024. His administration has prioritized strengthening Senegal’s ties with neighboring countries through proactive regional diplomacy. Guinea-Bissau was among the first nations to congratulate Faye on his electoral victory and played a supportive role during Senegal’s recent political transition. The visit underscores both countries’ commitment to good neighborly relations and shared development goals within ECOWAS and the broader West African subregion.
