On Monday, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef Ahmed Al-Sharif met with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in Tehran as part of a diplomatic mission to reinforce bilateral relations between the two nations. The meeting, which took place at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marked an important step in strengthening ties between Sudan and Iran amidst the ongoing internal conflict in Sudan.
During the discussion, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s long-standing policy of developing relations with all Islamic countries, emphasizing Sudan’s pivotal role as a key Arab and Islamic nation. He expressed Iran’s commitment to supporting Sudan and underscored the significance of solidarity among Islamic nations, particularly in times of crisis.
Araghchi also expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has caused widespread suffering and devastation. He voiced regret over the humanitarian impact of the conflict, which has led to over 28,000 deaths, displaced millions, and left many Sudanese families grappling with extreme famine. In some regions, families have resorted to eating grass to survive, while widespread atrocities, including ethnically motivated killings, rape, and human rights abuses, have been reported by the United Nations and human rights organizations.

The situation has drawn international attention, with the International Criminal Court (ICC) launching investigations into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the conflict. The United States has also accused the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies of committing genocide.
Araghchi emphasized the importance of preserving Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for an end to foreign interference and the creation of conditions that would allow for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He urged the Sudanese leadership to prioritize national consensus, which he believes is crucial for restoring peace and stability to the country.
The Iranian Foreign Minister’s remarks came at a critical moment for Sudan, where efforts to mediate the conflict have been stymied by political fragmentation and escalating violence. Despite these challenges, Iran has expressed its willingness to continue its support for Sudan, including through diplomatic, humanitarian, and economic assistance, while urging international actors to respect Sudan’s sovereignty.
As the humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to worsen, international diplomacy remains vital in seeking a sustainable peace agreement. The meeting between the Sudanese and Iranian officials signifies the growing importance of regional partnerships in addressing the complex challenges facing Sudan during this turbulent period.
The meeting between Al-Sharif and Araghchi also laid the groundwork for further cooperation between Sudan and Iran, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as trade, energy, and regional security. Both countries are keen to build on their historical ties and explore opportunities for collaboration in the future.
