Ghana’s President Suspends Chief Justice Torkornoo Amid Investigation into Conduct

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, announced the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo on April 22, following a preliminary investigation into allegations against her. The suspension comes after three separate petitions were submitted calling for her removal, and the decision was made in consultation with the Council of State, in line with the 1992 Constitution.

While the specifics of the allegations remain confidential, the petitions have ignited significant public debate regarding judicial accountability in Ghana. Chief Justice Torkornoo was given ten days to respond to the petitions and submitted her reply on April 7. After reviewing her response, President Mahama confirmed that a prima facie case had been established, warranting further investigation.

A five-member committee, comprising legal and academic professionals as well as former public officials, has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation. The committee will operate under the provisions of the Constitution, and the Chief Justice’s suspension will remain in effect until the inquiry is completed.

The investigation into Torkornoo’s conduct could have far-reaching consequences for Ghana’s judicial system, particularly concerning the integrity and accountability of its highest legal office.
