Kenya and Egypt Push Deeper Ties, Back Dialogue on Nile Water Cooperation

Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi held talks in Nairobi on Monday with Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister Badr Abdelatty, as the two countries moved to strengthen bilateral relations, trade and investment. Discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation, boosting private-sector partnerships and diversifying traded goods. Both sides also agreed to fast-track the creation of a Joint Business Council aimed at increasing investment flows and supporting shared economic growth.

Water security featured prominently in the talks. Mudavadi said Kenya remains committed to Africa-led, dialogue-based solutions under the Nile Basin Initiative, which brings together 10 countries that share the Nile Basin. He stressed that cooperation and consultation remain essential as climate change and population growth intensify pressure on water resources.

Abdelatty echoed the need for cooperation, saying water-related challenges should be addressed through “win-win solutions” that respect the interests of all Nile Basin states, including Egypt. The Nile Basin Initiative aims to promote sustainable development through equitable and coordinated use of the Nile’s shared water resources. Officials said continued engagement within the framework would help reduce tensions and support long-term regional stability.
