Mauritanian President Urges Compassion and Solidarity with Crisis-Hit Mali

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has called on citizens to show solidarity and understanding toward neighboring Mali, which continues to grapple with worsening insecurity and economic hardship. Speaking during a tour of the Hodh Ech Chargui region near the Malian border, President Ghazouani urged Mauritanians to exercise empathy and patience as Mali endures fuel shortages, attacks on transport convoys, and a collapse in regional trade following years of armed conflict and diplomatic isolation. “Mali’s difficulties are our own,” Ghazouani said. “We cannot expect to live normally when our brothers across the border are suffering. Our history and culture bind us; we must face these challenges together.”

The president acknowledged that instability in Mali has had a direct impact on Mauritanian border communities, disrupting trade and travel, but stressed that compassion not resentment should guide the national response. He also emphasized Mauritania’s commitment to supporting Mali’s peace and reconstruction efforts, even amid growing regional insecurity in the Sahel, where militant attacks and shifting alliances have strained cross-border relations. Ghazouani warned against “emotional or reactionary responses,” saying that while conflicts may be temporary, the two nations’ shared geography and deep cultural ties demand coexistence and cooperation. Mauritania and Mali share a 2,200-kilometer border and have long maintained close economic and social relations, though recent instability has tested these bonds. Ghazouani’s remarks come as regional leaders seek ways to stabilize the Sahel following the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers and the rise of military-led governments in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
